What are the age categories?

Age Classification & Eligibility:

We use the Webscorer event management and results system to automatically assign swimmers to the correct age category. This ensures consistent and accurate classification across the entire series.

A swimmer’s age for the season is calculated based on their age on the date of the first swim of the series each year. This age is then used for all swims within that series.

Age Categories
  • Junior: 12–16 years
  • Open: 17–29 years
  • Masters: 30–44 years
  • Senior Masters: 45–59 years
  • Legends: 60–69 years
  • True Tridents: 70+ years
Minimum Age Requirements
  • Long-course / longer series swims: Minimum age 12 years
  • 500 m novice swim: Minimum age 10 years

Is there an overall winner of the series?

Yes!
An overall series winner is determined each year.
We operate a points-based system across all eligible races. Swimmers earn points at each event, and these accumulate throughout the series. This structure encourages participants who are chasing points to attend and compete in as many swims as possible.

How does the point system work?

1st place : 12 Points
2nd place : 9 points
3rd place : 7 points
4th pLace : 5 points
5th place : 3 points
All entries : 1 point

Can I register on the day?

No!
Registrations for each event close at 5:00 pm on the day prior to the swim. This cut-off ensures that we can accurately plan and provide the required level of water safety for all participants.

Do I need a wetsuit?

Wetsuits are recommended for all swimmers; however, they are not compulsory.

Can I get a refund if I can't make it?

A full refund is available provided you notify us before registrations close for that event.

Event Safety

All swims are conducted in partnership with Surf Life Saving Tasmania (SLST) and local surf lifesaving clubs. These organisations provide trained personnel and follow established operational procedures to ensure the highest level of participant safety.
Safety measures typically include:
  • Qualified Lifesaving Personnel: Events are staffed by trained surf lifesavers who hold current awards in water safety, rescue operations, and first aid.
  • Water Safety Craft: IRBs (Inflatable Rescue Boats), rescue boards, and other craft are deployed to monitor swimmers and respond quickly if assistance is required.
  • Pre-Event Risk Assessments: Conditions such as tides, weather, surf, and visibility are reviewed prior to each swim to confirm it is safe to proceed.
  • Participant Monitoring: Lifesavers track swimmer progress throughout the course and maintain communication with event officials.
  • Emergency Response Capability: Clubs are equipped to manage incidents promptly, including medical response and rescue operations.
These combined measures ensure that every swim operates under SLST’s recognised safety standards.

Where Your Registration Fee Goes?

Every dollar left after covering the costs of our swims is returned directly to the surf club that hosts the event.
